On January 27, 1945, Soviet troops captured Auschwitz, the largest Nazi death camp, and rescued prisoners. Since the beginning of World War II, millions of Jews, Romanians, dissidents, disabled people and prisoners of war have been massacred in similar camps. The United Nations General Assembly recognized January 27 as the "International Holocaust Remembrance Day". Auschwitz-Birkenau remains today as a museum of shame for all crimes against humanity.
